A dating scan is an ultrasound scan to determine how many weeks pregnant you are and your due date. Read on for more information about what a dating scan offers. A dating scan might be recommended before 12 weeks to confirm your due date if you are unsure of your last menstrual period or your date of conception. The scan is optional and not everyone will have it. You can discuss whether you want or need a dating scan with your doctor or midwife. What to expect at your 7 weeks pregnancy ultrasound

This scan will be your first glimpse at your developing baby and we can accurately give you your due date of your baby. Measurements are taken such that the dates of the pregnancy can be confirmed or determined. Other information obtained includes whether the pregnancy is in the uterus or outside the uterus an ectopic pregnancy , how many embryos there are, and whether there are any complications surrounding the pregnancy at this early stage. If you have not had any problems, then the Midwife will state that you are low risk and will be suitable for Midwifery-led care. This means that you will have all of your Antenatal care provided by the Midwife, and you will only need to attend the hospital for routine scan appointments.

You will not see an Obstetrician unless a problem arises. During your pregnancy we will continuously assess you and your baby to ensure that we provide the appropriate care for you and your baby. At or around 36 weeks the Midwife will discuss your birth plan with you and complete a Risk Assessment to check that your pregnancy has been uneventful. If you and the Midwife are happy, then they will state that you are low risk and will give you the contact details for the Midwifery-led Unit to call when you are in labour.
