This book is dedicated to Todd -my favorite hockey player and the one who completes my team- Chapter One Ignoring the blister on her heel and her sore back, Gabby Davis plastered on a smile and picked up the last tray of cupcakes. Straightening the red sugared poinsettia on one, she gave the final display of chocolate frosted confections a nod of approval. The ache in her back was nothing compared to the ache in her heart and the sinking feeling of desperation that followed her from the kitchen of the fancy hotel like a dark cloud ready to burst with rain. She checked her watch-the Christmas party would last only another thirty minutes or so-there was no time to worry about Justin now. She’d deal with her brother later. Just like she’d been dealing with him for most of her life. Smoothing down the front of her pressed white caterer’s shirt, she pushed on the swinging door of the kitchen. The door didn’t budge. Instead it burst inward, smashing the entire tray of cupcakes against her chest as a waiter carrying a tray of dirty dishes hurried through.

Results indicated that alcohol use was negatively correlated with relationship satisfaction. Furthermore, hazardous drinkers with high relationship satisfaction indicated more readiness-to-change alcohol use than hazardous drinkers with low relationship satisfaction. Alcohol problems were not related to readiness-to-change relationship issues. These findings indicate that highly satisfied dating relationships during college may positively influence readiness-to-change heavy drinking habits among college students.
Additionally, hazardous drinking i. One factor that has been shown to affect alcohol use and health behaviors in adults is involvement in a committed relationship. One possible reason for this effect of marriage is the transformation of motivation that may take place in dyads as partners begin to perceive particular behavioral changes as meaningful or important to their partner and necessary for the continuity and preservation of relationship health Lewis et al.
This, in turn, may motivate an individual to contemplate changing his or her drinking e. Currently, few studies have addressed whether the benefits of intimate relationships in adulthood i. This is an important step in the research on this topic as partners reporting greater relationship quality may be more willing to sacrifice or make changes to fit the needs of their partner, thus furthering their motivation to alter behavioral patterns, such as problematic alcohol use Lewis et al.
Additionally, because of the higher likelihood for heavy alcohol use and subsequent negative consequences among college students relative to non-student populations, it is likely that heavy alcohol use impacts the relationship functioning of individuals involved in a romantic relationship during college.

Recent Developments in Alcoholism pp Cite as. Alcohol consumption increases subjective sexual desire, arousal, and pleasure for many women, although it lowers physiological arousal. Despite the general belief that alcohol disinhibits female sexual behaviors, alcohol leads to changes in sexual behavior only for a minority of women. Expectancies about the effects of alcohol on sexual behavior may be important mediators of the alcohol-sexual behavior linkage.
There also is a relationship between overall alcohol consumption and risky sexual behavior for women, but when alcohol use at or preceding individual instances of sexual activity is examined, there is no association in the majority of studies.
