We have dated it to 30 October BC, making it possibly the oldest datable solar eclipse recorded. This enables us to refine the dates of certain Egyptian pharaohs, including Ramesses the Great. It also suggests that the expressions currently used for calculating changes in the Earth’s rate of rotation can be reliably extended back years, from BC to BC. In modern astronomy, solar eclipses are categorized into three types: total, annular and partial. In the ancient world, however, observers did not distinguish between total and annular solar eclipses. In China, as in many other cultures, there is evidence of interest and observation of the sky from many years earlier than written documentation suggests. Examples of pottery now held at the Beijing Ancient Observatory and dated to the Neolithic period over years ago show images of the sun, and intricately carved animal shells and bones depict images of the stars as well as astronomical events such as star explosions which may date back as far as BC.
It is possible that the observation of the sky in a scientific sense was first undertaken as a way of marking time and recording events within a recurring pattern in order to create a calendar. A calendar marks the seasons and helps farmers to know when to plant and harvest their grain. Like many ancient societies, China based its calendar upon the phases of the moon but then added extra months. This was because a solar year is not evenly divisible by an exact number of lunar months — there are about This is called a luni-solar calendar.
The Chinese calendar therefore had a thirteen-month year every two or three years. In May , some relics of this early astronomical activity were uncovered with the discovery of the oldest astronomical observatory known in China today. Educational activities are one of the essential tasks of the Union. It is a three-week international postgraduate school for regions where students have less opportunity to be directly exposed to the full extent of up-to-date astrophysics mainly, but not exclusively, from astronomically developing countries. During the school both theory and observations are addressed.
The curriculum includes a standard set of self-contained, coherent lectures that cover the basic concepts and theories of selected fields of astronomy and astrophysics, along with relevant instrumentation and observation, and data reduction and calibration, understandable to students with good college mathematics and physics but not necessarily astronomy training, plus selected thematic topics of the latest development and trend of the fields. How do we know the age of the surfaces we see on planets and moons? If a world has a surface as opposed to being mostly gas and liquid , astronomers have developed some techniques for estimating how long ago that surface solidified. Note that the age of these surfaces is not necessarily the age of the planet as a whole. On geologically active objects including Earth , vast outpourings of molten rock or the erosive effects of water and ice, which we call planet weathering, have erased evidence of earlier epochs and present us with only a relatively young surface for investigation.
One way to estimate the age of a surface is by counting the number of impact craters. This technique works because the rate at which impacts have occurred in the solar system has been roughly constant for several billion years. Thus, in the absence of forces to eliminate craters, the number of craters is simply proportional to the length of time the surface has been exposed. This technique has been applied successfully to many solid planets and moons Figure 1.
Figure 1. Bear in mind that crater counts can tell us only the time since the surface experienced a major change that could modify or erase preexisting craters. Estimating ages from crater counts is a little like walking along a sidewalk in a snowstorm after the snow has been falling steadily for a day or more.
